6789 Honors Choirs

Andrea Gay has been teaching, directing, and engaging students at the secondary level for 24 years. She is passionate about sharing the gift of music with the communities she serves and is a student centered educator. She currently is the vocal music educator at Crestwood Middle School, in Kentwood Mi where she
directs the 6th, 7th, & 8th Grade Choirs, General Music & Piano classes as well as the School Musical. During her time there, choirs under her direction have consistently earned Division 1 Ratings as a part of the Michigan School of Vocal Music Association Choral Festivals. She is a past District 10 Co-Manager and is active in this organization. Andrea has also served as the vocal music director for the Grand Rapids Chamber Music Camp since 2022.

She thoroughly enjoys sharing her teaching knowledge with the next generation of educators and consistently hosts and mentors student teachers from GVSU. She is also the Youth Choir & Handbell’s Director at Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Rapids, MI. Andrea holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Music Education from Central Michigan University with a minor in Choral Direction.

In her spare time she enjoys spending time with her 2 children and extended family, and enjoys reading. She is also an avid tennis player, a member of the United States Tennis Association, and serves as Captain to her 18+ Weekend Women’s Travel Team. Andrea is BEYOND thrilled to be serving as the 2025-2026 MSVMA SA Honors Choir Director and looks forward to working with these talented Michigan singers!

Dr. Jacob Berglin joined the faculty in the Irving S. Gilmore School of Music at Western Michigan University in the fall of 2023, where he teaches courses in choral music education, supervises intern teachers, and is the director of Amphion, the tenor/bass choir on campus. Prior to his appointment at Western, he taught middle/high school choral and general music in Michigan before pursuing graduate work at the University of Michigan and Northwestern University. Dr. Berglin’s return home to Michigan comes after four years on the faculty at Florida International University in Miami.

Amphion continues to build a name and reputation in the community, performing with the other university choirs each semester and in concerts around the state of Michigan. Since Dr. Berglin’s arrival on campus, they have performed at the Kalamazoo Institute of Art, with the Kalamazoo Male Chorus, at the National Seminar of the IMC Tenor/Bass Consortium, with Cantus at Western’s inaugural BroncoTBDay, and at the Michigan School Vocal Music Association (MSVMA) District VI Tenor/Bass Invitational, where Dr. Berglin was the guest conductor.

Kyle Cain is the choir director at Jenison Junior High School in Jenison, MI where he directs the Arietta Choir, Bel Canto Choir, and co-directs the 7-8-9 Male Chorus with Grant Carmichael. He has earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in music education from Western Michigan University. This is his 17th year in choral music education, having previously taught in the Bangor and Mona Shores school districts. Kyle works with an incredible team of music educators at all grade levels in Jenison, and he feels extremely fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn from them each and every day. He is also grateful for the guidance and encouragement of so many of his colleagues and friends in MSVMA over the years.

Kyle is also an avid participant in community theatre, and has performed in many productions in the Grand Rapids area over the past 20 years. He also has performed as a member of Vox GR, a professional chamber choir based in West Michigan. He lives in Hudsonville with his wife Amy and enjoys playing board games with friends and family, planning trips to amusement parks, and listening to audio books.

High School Honors Choirs

Ashley Ward is in her sixteenth year as a music educator. This is her eleventh year as director of vocal music at Walled Lake Northern High School in the Walled Lake Consolidated School District, where she directs three curricular choral ensembles, two extracurricular choral ensembles, and teaches a Piano and Acting class. Her choirs include the Knight Singers, Advanced Women, Bel Canto, Octet, and Chamber Singers. She also is the vocal director and producer of the school musical. Her choirs consistently earn highest ratings at district and state festivals, and her students have participated in Regional, State and All State Choirs, as well as District and State Solo and Ensemble Festivals. Her choirs have performed in Chicago, Disney World and New York City. Before her tenure at Walled Lake Northern, Ashley previously taught at Bloomfield Hills Middle School in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan (2009-2014).

Mrs. Ward holds degrees in Choral Conducting (M.M.-2015), Choral Music Education, and Vocal Performance (B.Mus- 2009), all from Oakland University. She is an active member of the Michigan School Vocal Music Association. She currently lives in Waterford with her husband Zack, and their children Grayson and Harper.

Matthew W. Smith is the Director of Choirs and also the Performing Arts Department Chair at Lake Orion High School in Lake Orion, MI. He is currently in his 7th year at LOHS and, overall, his 17th year of teaching. In those 17 years, Matthew has taught K-12th grade music in Livonia Public Schools, Rochester Community Schools, Lake Shore Public Schools, and Lake Orion Community Schools.

Matthew holds his Bachelor of Music from Oakland University (’09) where he studied under the mentorship of Dr. Michael A. Mitchell. He has taken his ensembles to district & state Choral Festival and Solo and Ensemble where they have consistently received superior and 1st division ratings. Matthew has also had his choirs selected to perform at the Michigan Music Conference in 2019 choral hour and the MSVMA All-State Gala in 2022. Matthew currently is serving as the District Manager of District 16. Matthew is also an active member of ACDA and alumnus of Phi Mu Alpha Fraternity.

Matthew would like to thank all his family, friends, colleagues, and mentors for all that they have done through the years to support him and his love for making music with students.

Throughout thirty-six years in education, Dr. James Borst has taught Kindergarten through college level students. He taught K-12 music at North Muskegon Public Schools, K-12 music at Kentwood Public Schools and 8th-12th grade choral music at East Grand Rapids Public Schools. Borst also taught choir and music education courses at Grand Valley State University and Calvin University. His career includes teaching at Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, St Cecilia Music Society and the North American Choral Company.

James was president of the Michigan School Vocal Music Association from 2005-2011. Other MSVMA activities include editor of the newsletter, repertoire selection for middle and high school, festival adjudicator, and guest clinician. He received the Carolyn Leep scholarship in 1998, and his peers voted him to conduct the SSA Junior High State Honors Choir that same year.

Borst was the MSVMA Choir Teacher of the Year in 2011, and he won the Outstanding Music Educator Award from the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra in 2014. In May 2019, James received the Principal’s Award for meritorious contributions to East Grand Rapids High School.

James earned a bachelor’s degree in music education, a master’s degree in choral conducting, and a PhD in choral music education, all from Michigan State University.
