Roger Emerson
Conference Headliner 

 

With over 900 titles in print and 30 million copies in circulation, Roger Emerson is the most widely performed composer/arranger of popular choral music in the world today. His works include the choral arrangements of Josh Groban's You Raise Me Up, Seasons of Love, from RENT, Defying Gravity from WICKED, Joyful, Joyful from SISTER ACT, Don't Stop Believin' from GLEE, as well as best selling choral arrangements, Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel, O Sifuni Mungu, and Riversong. Mr. Emerson has been the recipient of ASCAP's Standard Award for 20 years running and his works have been performed at the White House, Carnegie Hall and the Kennedy Center. In addition to his work as a composer/arranger, he has appeared at numerous MENC and ACDA conferences throughout the United States and Canada and is on the teaching staff of College of the Siskiyous in Northern California where he conducts the vocal jazz program and teaches guitar.

Call for MSVMA College Members to serve at Mentors at the CSLC

MSVMA college members have the opportunity to experience Dr. Arau for free by signing up to serve as a mentor for the day of the conference. MSVMA College mentors will help Dr. Arau by leading small group activities as well as being a part of a Q & A during our lunch time together.

We are seeking nominations of talented young jazz vocalists to participate in the 8th annual Detroit Jazz Festival Youth Vocal Jazz Competition. After the nomination process is completed, several finalists will be chosen. Each finalist will perform two jazz standards with a professional jazz trio at the event finals on Thursday, August 4th at the Dirty Dog Jazz Café (note: parents of the finalists can reserve seating by contacting the Dirty Dog).
 
A panel of judges, including Detroit vocalist Ursula Walker and other top Detroit vocal jazz talent, along with Chris Collins (DJF Artistic Director) will select a grand prize winner and up to three runners-up. Vocalists will be judged based on artistic excellence, creativity, technique, and originality. 


Nominations must be received by noon on July 15th, 2022

  • Grand Prize
    • $1000 cash award
    • A performance spot at the Detroit Jazz Festival
    • Additional coaching for the Detroit Jazz Festival performance (Labor Day weekend)
  • Runners-up  (Maximum of 3)
    • $500 cash award
