MSVMA will implement a mask mandate for all festival events for the remainder of the 2021-2022 school year. The expectation is that teachers of individual schools will inform students and parents that all participating choirs, directors, and spectators will be required to mask.

MSVMA Choral Festival Repertoire Policy

For the 2021-2022 Festival Season, the required repertoire lists are now "suggested repertoire". There is now a song in the scheduler titled "DIRECTOR CHOICE" that can be used for the required piece if a director is choosing to sing something that is not on either required list. There is no sight-reading level attached to this song; directors will simply tell the adjudicator which level and voicing you are choosing to sing when you walk into the sight-reading room.

MSVMA Choral Festival Minimum Participants

For the 2021-2022 school year, the Choral Festival minimum of 17 participants will be removed. The normal full choir payment rates, grading, and sight reading procedures will apply, regardless of ensemble size at choral festival.

These updates, guidelines, and policy changes were carefully proposed and discussed by your colleagues and will best serve our great organization. Please do not hesitate to reach out with questions or clarifications on any of the changes.

There is a bill proposed in the Michigan legislature that would have extreme consequences for arts education organizations like MSVMA who are partially funded by school membership dues. Bill 5424 in the Michigan Legislature is currently hearing testimony and seeks to prohibit the use of public funds for organizational membership dues. The bill is targeted at large organizations such as the Michigan Association of School Boards and the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals, but the ramifications of its passing would doom dozens of organizations that provide resources and educational opportunities for Michigan teachers and students.

MSVMA works with the Cultural Advocacy Network (CAN), Kelley-Cawthorne lobbyists in Lansing, and the Cultural Caucus within the Michigan Legislature and is rallying all possible support to oppose this bill. We need your help and support! We urge you to use a few minutes to write to your local and state legislators. We must flood inboxes with opposition to this bill that would remove so many opportunities for Michigan students. Have you wanted to work toward an advanced degree or participate in a non-degree choral music institute or workshop? Does study in the areas of choral conducting, composition, with emphasis on choral/vocal music, vocal music education and church music with vocal/choral emphasis sound interesting?
